The Eye of the World: The Graphic Novel, Volume One was a great adaption of Robert Jordan's book of the same name, and it stayed faithful to the source material, something that I thoroughly commend.
Some of the pictures were odd, especially when they were ones from further away. Like, look at this one of Rand from a distance:
What the heck is that face? Now, my artistic talents are so minuscule that calling them "talents" is definately a stretch. In fact, I probably couldn't draw to save my life, but surely someone who can would see this and fix it?
Another qualm I had with the art (I promise this is the last. It was amazing otherwise) was that Lan sometimes looked like he was wearing a fluorescent lime green cloak on his way to some kind of 80's disco rave. Example:
And that's not to say that his cloak should not have been green, because that is how the cloaks are described after all. But couldn't we have gone just a tad darker? Otherwise, the art of his cloak was great. That camouflage look that Robert Jordan describes was brought to life wonderfully. Look:
It is kind of opaque, but transparent at the same time. You can see where Lan's shoulders end, but also the light shining through from the open door behind him. I don't know, I may just be nitpicking at nothing, but I thought it was very cleverly done.
The art overall was far from bad. I think that Moiraine's ageless Aes Sedai look was done really well. Some images she would look really young, while others she would look mature and around 30 years of age. If I was reading this without knowing Moiraine's actual age, I don't think I would be able to put an age to her face - which is exactly what Robert Jordan intended. I think this image of Moiraine is the best example of this:
Also to do with Moiraine, I thought that her story about Manetheren translated well into a visual medium. I look forward to (hopefully) seeing more of the One Power and channeling drawn in volume two. We did get a little in this volume, as shown in Moiraine's story, but I hope to see more from when Egwene is learning to use the Power. I do hope that we see more than wriggles coming out from the channeler's head to signify that the One Power is being used, because that is kind of all that was shown in volume one:
But I'll give them some slack because that is really the only display of the Power in this volume. Again, I am no artist so it's not like I could do anything better by myself. I guess I am just being overcritical of the art because I love the series so much, but I did really love this piece of Moiraine and Lan, and it was probably my favourite:
So yes. Volume one was great, and I hope volume two will be as well. I don't have access to any of the further four volumes, through my library or otherwise, but if the quality is consistent in the next volume, I may have to somehow get my hands on them in a roundabout way.
