The author has strong opinions about obesity, modern technology, feminism and men being helpless and she lectures the reader on her beliefs every chance she gets. If I want to know the details of gastric bypass surgery or that BMI of 30 means one is obese I'll read a non-fiction book about it.

The FICTIONAL part of the story was painful to read. I didn't like any of the characters and didn't care by the end how anything turned out. Many of the characters' actions seemed unbelievable - what mother would drop her 14-year-old daughter off on a street corner to hang out with adult men? Or not call the police when her husband left unexpectedly? The 8-year-old son goes to bed in his underwear because "Mom, you didn't put me in my pajamas!"?
