A nice, heart-warming read with a dash of whimsy. While I enjoyed this book, it was different from what I imagined.

I was surprised to see this book tagged as adult fiction. The style of writing makes you feel as though you’re watching an animated film. The plot is simple and predictable, with heavy handed morality lessons. You can see the ending coming from a mile away, which weakened the second half of the book.

Character behaviours feel too contrived, both main and side characters. Despite the book talking about relative morality and shades of grey in the world, every character felt black and white. The author makes it very clear which characters are ‘good’ and which characters are ‘bad’. Personally, I don’t enjoy being spoon fed what to think as a reader.

All of the above, combined with an overlay of saturated saccharine sweetness, makes this book more suitable for 10-12 year olds.
