The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

Actually what I'm probably remembering is mostly a project called '1002' which was essentially a send-up of TNOTR as a Doctor Who story. It involved a monastery, certes, but set in Burgundy at the time that King Robert of France staked his (successful) claim to that historic territory. It also involved a young, stranded alien creature (what is it with DW and space animals leaving their litters all over Earth?) which warps Time as a defence mechanism while waiting for its Mum to come and pick it up. There are burnings. Hence the subtitle, Arson Planet. As to this novel I did wonder about the apparent dig at JL Borges who I thought everyone had down as a good egg, as generally liked as Bob Ross only without the hair and the happy little trees.
