Martyr!
by Kaveh Akbar
This book single handedly became an unintentional muse for me. Not even lying when I say that reading Matyr gave me the strength to open my journal with the intention to just simply write.
I don't know what it was about this book that made the dedicated practicing of art so alluring. It possibly was because of the musings of our protagonist, Cyrus, who deals with rampant addiction and alcoholism, and finds that not even poetry can quell the insatiable depths of his sadness.
Kaveh Akbar writes with a fluidity that is dreamily poised and also quite sardonic and peculiar. How odd and extremely wonderful that I can laugh at one section, then feel my stomach coil itself on the next page. His background in poetry resounds strongly throughout the entire book.
I borrowed this book from my local library so I didn't have too much time to unpack everything. But Matyr is one of those reads where I felt glad that I took the time to finish it. Oh what I would do to experience this book again
