This book is a masterpiece.
This is the best book I have ever read about Elizabeth.
Kay expertly presents Elizabeth as a powerful, complicated and inspiring, strong woman and draws upon a vast bank of historical knowledge of her life and the period. This book is not only entertaining but incredibly interesting and I feel I have gained much more of an understanding of the Tudor era and of the great lady that was Elizabeth the First.
What I found most interesting about this book was the vastness in its timeline. It starts right when Elizabeth is born to when she dies. Included within this is the period between Henry VIII's reign and Elizabeth's. Not many books that I have come across go into much detail about the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I. This was especially fascinating to see this complicated time and to witness what went on in this period of time.
The ending is breathtaking. This book is long and in a lot of depth but Kay has not ruined it or made it a let down in the ending at all. I cried like a baby at the end. It is so beautiful.
Overall, I think more books should be written like this. Kay knows how to portray a powerful, fascinating and deeply complicated woman. She has written Elizabeth so realistically and in so much depth of complicated layers of her personality.
I really recommend you read it if you are a fan of the Elizabethan era.
