Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now by Walter Brueggemann

4.0

This is a meaningful book on the importance of continuing the observance of the 4th commandment even in Christianity, and is fairly anti-capitalist, too. Unfortunately, it reminded me of other books, by more conservative authors, that pretend the Hebrew Scriptures are for Christians. Due to being written by a more progressive author, of course this book does a little better at acknowledging the fact that sabbath is a wholly Jewish concept. That doesn’t mean no one else can practice it, and I do think it’s important for Christians and people of all other religions or irreligious paths to set aside a period of time for rest. I just wish that Judaism was provided a bit more space and reverence.

It was a good book, but I got a weird feeling in my gut about the way Scriptures were used, at times, as if they were for gentiles, and not for the community who wrote it and, to this day, continues to practice.
