The Song of Roland by Unknown

4.0

A marvelous tale of war, nation, and heroism. I have a sweet spot for medieval literature, and The Song of Roland does a great job at satisfying that craving. That's saying a lot, given how I am the decedent of the people Roland and the Franks demonize and eventually exile - seriously, the Franks are pretty narrow minded.
Nevertheless, the writing is superb, surprisingly witty, and meticulously defined. I love how every sword or lance has its own name and history, how every battle is depicted, and how exceptional many of the characters interpersonal relationships are. I have yet to see this in other medieval texts.
Overall a great read.
