The Call of the Wild
by Jack London
I read this book for my book club's topic of "banned books." The Call of the Wild, aka, how many times can I cry during 1 book, is absolutely amazing. My husband tells me he read this in the 4th grade which absolutely shocks me, but also tells me why this book was banned. It is laughable almost how violent this book can be at times, though even the violence itself is beautifully written. I found myself so caught up in the story of Buck that I forgot at times that he was a dog. And my heart soared when good things happened to him, and it broke when bad things did.
While I understand why this book was banned, I am glad it isn't anymore. And while I read it with horrified eyes over the blood and violence, it was also beautiful.
