Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
3.0

I absolutely love these books. This series is a comfort read for me, all the time. I first started them when I was in 8th or 9th grade. They were my first urban fantasy/paranormal romance books. So they introduced me to the genre and over time, I have returned to the characters like they were old friends.

Revisiting this series has left me pleasantly surprised. Now, I’m not the most avid UF reader in the world, but I’ve read my share, and I can say that these definitely hold their own in the genre. Dead Until Dark definitely follows a specific rhythm. But that’s okay. What I lost most about the genre generally, and this series specifically, is that I know exactly what I’m getting into and what to expect.

Sookie is still a favorite character of mine. She’s adorable and hilarious, and though she’s kind of a prude, she’s no shrinking violet. I love that she is independent enough to get by without a man, but still acknowledges that she’d like a relationship. She tough as nails, but without it being too over the top – Sookie allows herself to feel things, to process the weird crap happening around her. She’s not cold or distant, but she is strong.

Bill is the same as ever, too. He’s a total creep. I mean, I like him, quite a bit. But now that I’ve been overexposed to a TON of weirdos and stalkerish boyfriends, I’m kind of over it. I do think he’s an interesting and complex character, and I like that he has shit to do outside of stalking Sookie (which he doesn’t really do – it’s just that he’s a bit over-protective and quick with the “I love you’s”. ) We don’t really get to know him well in this first installment, so maybe it’s just that I know what happens in the later books. I wish I could remember what I thought of him the very first time I read this.

The world-building in the Sookie Stackhouse books is really intriguing. Vampires are out of the coffin, as they call it, and they walk freely among humans – just at night. Their story is that they’ve been infected by a virus that causes all sorts of strange allergic reactions. But it’s up for debate whether their story is true. The vampires kind of migrate to New Orleans, and so Sookie’s hometown of Bon Temps, a small town in norther Louisiana, gets a little overflow of that culture. There are girls who are groupies for the vampires – fang-bangers – and the story surrounds the mysterious deaths of these girls.

When I first read Dead Until Dark I was pretty surprised by the outcome and who the murderer was. It’s fun rereading surprising mysteries like this one, knowing how it ends, and trying to pick out clues.

In all, I definitely enjoyed rereading Dead Until Dark yet again. I haven’t read the full series – only the first four or five – so I am excited to immerse myself into this crazy world yet again and finally see how it ends!
