like looking at a vignette from My Brilliant Friend from an outside vantage point.  I like Ferrante in a shorter format more; this felt like a full-length novel while not even hitting 150 pages.

I like how uncomfortable this narrative world feels.

Also interesting to read this at the same time as Deborah Levy's Real Estate, which is somewhat in conversation with Elena Ferrante and her most prominent themes and ideas.  Levy mentions The Story of the Lost Child in Real Estate, a book also about "missing" female characters, the drains of motherhood, and feminine guilt.  Both narrators have two daughters who are now in their 20s and are adjusting to being empty nesters, having also separated from their husbands.  interesting parallels between The Lost Daughter and Deborah Levy's real life (outside the darkness and shady shit).
