When Breath Becomes Air
by Paul Kalanithi
A good introspective read. There are a lot of disconnected, slow, and verbose areas of the book (especially the forward and beginning). I would encourage readers to persevere and finish this short memoir. There are some great gems and the wife (Lucy) skillfully rounds out the story and highlights Paul's main messages.
Paul has a lot of deep thoughts as he explores the juxtaposing question of "what is life vs living?" As he faces death in its various forms--a doctor saving a patient's life, a patient battling a sneaky cancer that wanes and waxes, the end of his perfect future and ultimate career dream, and the final last breath--he goes on a journey of self discovery. He becomes truly alive as he discovers how to be a more compassionate doctor, husband, father, and friend.
