Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

3.0

An attempt at diversity and novelty in the genre, I believe? Admirable intent, but perhaps not the greatest of executions.

I just didn't find many things believable/realistic. Some things felt forced. Especially the all-encompassing romance. The ending was particularly unbuyable. Come on---one year warrants more than something heavy and winged taking off!

3 stars because I was gripped by the story and enjoyed reading it. There were, I admit, a few great contemplative lines along the way. There were also some funny moments, and I was quite interested in some of the side characters, like Park's parents.

Sharing the only two lines from the book that I highlighted, because I was amused by them:
Maybe this was why so many people said it felt better to drive a stick shift.

(Referring to nerve endings in the palm.) Maybe it is part of it...
... his eyes were so green they could turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.

So out there I found it funny.
