The Silent Waters by Brittainy C. Cherry
5.0

I was not ready for this book. My heart hurt in all kinds of ways: as a child, a parent, a sibling, a best friend, a lover.

The storytelling is so poetic and heartbreaking. And it spans decades, which is always tricky but is done very well here.

When 10 year old Maggie loses her voice, her brother’s best friend and the boy she swore she’d marry someday, Brooks, promises to be her anchor and seems to be the only one who truly hears Maggie in her silence.

It’s about love that starts as friendship and is easy until others intervene. It’s about being there for each other in exactly the right way, even if that means giving someone space. It’s about keeping promises, even one’s made decades ago.

I loved every second of this book! Not just Maggie and Brooks’s story, but also Maggie’s parents and her siblings as well. It was a beautiful example of how one person’s trauma impacts those around them.
