The Essence by Kimberly Derting

3.0

After defeating Queen Sabara (kind of, no one knows her essence is still living along side of Charlie) Queen Charlaina is making the changes she has always wanted for her people. Ludania is no longer ruled by the class system, and they now speak the universal language of Englaise. While being the Queen has it's perks Charlie tires of being referred to as your majesty all the time. Though many of her people like the changes she is making for her country, there are also many people who oppose of the new classless society she has installed.

In the beginning of the book Niko Bartolo is told by his Queen Vespaire to kill Charlie. He agrees to invite her to the summit where she will meet her end. Charlie's only thoughts are to attend the summit with all of the other royalty hoping to trade with them to improve her countries resources. Along the way she is kidnapped by a man Floss and his son in the scablands. He tells Charlie and Zafir (her guard) that he heard of a plot to murder her and snatched her in order to keep her safe. They eventually make it to Queen Neva's land where the summit is being held, but Sabara's dreams are relentless if not revealing. She learns that Niko is immortal and throughout Sabaras reign they have found each other in each lifetime. She tries to ignore the feelings she has around Niko that aren't hers, but Sabara only grows stronger. While at the summit, Queen Langdon accuses Charlie of being Sabara and threatens to reveal her secret. Sabara takes control and kills Queen Langdon only for Niko to show up and take care of everything. He makes it look like she dies in her sleep and no one suspects anything. Brooklyn's father is one of the leaders in the dissention against Charlaina, and Sebastian the stable master at Charlaina's castle is a traitor. They all work together to kill her, but as they attempt to hold Angelina (her little sister) hostage, Charlie uses the Sabara's power to kill them all. Sebastion was long gone from the castle by the time they arrived, but his trail leaves off at the edge of Queen Elana's land Astonia. Eventually, Max forgives Charlie for kissing Niko since he knows it wasn't really her. At the end of the book Xander, once a friend of Elena is headed to Astonia to ask her of her involvement in the assassination attempts. It may lead to war between the two neighboring countries.
