Girls of Paper and Fire is a fantasy sapphic romance following Lei, a human girl who is taken from her home to become a concubine (known as a Paper Girl) for the Demon King because of her uniquely golden eyes. The Demon King and his court are ruthless, but within the palace walls, Lei finds a forbidden love worth fighting for.
This was a reread for me. I read this for the first time almost as soon as it came out, but I wanted to reread the first two books know that book three has been released. I can definitively say that I am still absolutely in love with this story, Natasha Ngan's writing, and Lei's romance. I love a good rebellion trope, and the climax of this book gripped me just as much on my reread.
Ngan's ability to describe scenery, delve into emotions of love and grief and fear, and create a world of rich history and lore based off of Malaysian culture is astounding. This book will remain as my favorite, and I'm so excited to continue my reread of book two before finally reading the conclusion to this epic story.
