I do feel a little mixed about this one, but overall had a good time reading it and found it enjoyable!
What I loved:
- the action/fighting
- the world building/lore around vampires/politics/multiculturalism
- gritty and real emotions - nothing feels sugar coated and I believed what I was reading
- the characters and character dynamics (they are complicated and tense and messy but also endearing)
- the romance/polyam element
- the overall plot and plot twists
What I didn't love:
- sooo much exposition, especially in the form of long winded dialogue (every decision and new development is discussed by the characters AT LENGTH)
- Remy...kind of annoyed me 😬 (part of this I feel like was intentional, but also I think is maybe a me thing?)
- I think the first half of the book in particular could have benefitted from a substantial amount of edits to cut/tighten things up - the very beginning and the last 70% had me on the edge of my seat, but the middle was a bit of a slog
- There seem to be a lot of named characters that we either never meet, meet once, or they have multiple names and I was often confused about who was even being referenced. I felt like I needed a character list to reference at times!
Overall, pretty fun ride. Original plot and very cool setting/world. I am moving on to the sequel!
