Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
1.0

Ok so first of all it wasn’t awful. It was pretty bad but I think if the editors were better (as in - if they had told the author not to use “chuckle” and “quirked” every FIVE MINUTES) then it could have been good because the plot wasn’t dismal but it was very predictable. The characters were also fine but just very generic and eh. I almost DNFed the book but I felt bad and to be fair it did get slightly better but the dumb word chuckled still came up every single page ugh.

Plot:
Predictable but also unneeded. If Lou had a magic ring that made her invisible why didn’t she use it???? Confusing. There were so many random side characters like Beau and also Mr Bernard, where did he come from? It felt like the moments that were meant to be shocking had no impact because of how heavily “hinted” at they’d been. Like the matching rings of Lou and Madame Labelle hmmmmmmmmm??? The book felt kind of unfinished, it ends at the same place it starts, Lou is running away from her mum but this time she’s in love with a Chassuer and now the reader also knows her Evil plot.

Characters:
Lou - I just didn’t really like her at the beginning. She does swear a lot but so what I don’t see how it makes her a powerful woman. Also her whole relationship thing with the Archbishop was just weird. I did feel for her though when she was taken back to the Chateau Blanch but she just didn’t seem like a realistic character based off of what she said.
Reid - he has copper coloured hair? I still can’t picture it but he can’t figure out anything either cause he literally lived with a witch for months and couldn’t tel that she was one.
Coco - probably my favourite character. She wasn’t dumb and she could fend for herself.
