Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5.0

Velvet Was the Night was a deliciously atmospheric and mysterious story. Silvia Moreno-Garcia managed to write characters entirely different from one another while still connecting them in the smallest and most vital ways. I was thoroughly wrapped up in the suspense of it all and was anxiously awaiting its resolution (though, to be honest, cared less about the outcome than I did the journey to get there). There were some great plot twists and I really enjoyed both of our main characters’ narrations—Maite in particular was a nice change of pace from the action and intensity of Elvis’s chapters since she was just a fantastically normal woman. The history behind the story was also fascinating and horrific, and I really appreciated the note at the end delving in more to the atrocities committed against young activists (and, as an Ohioan, it all felt very reminiscent of KSU—but obviously not comparable just in terms of scale, let alone everything else). After reading this, I feel like I need to read literally everything else Silvia Moreno-Garcia has written (and luckily for me, I happen to have two more works checked out already).
