A great read. I think it took the main characters a bit too long to figure out the mystery, but I enjoyed the whole ride. And once the mystery was cracked, the suspense really kicked off. Very creepy in unexpected ways, and Misha’s flashbacks were beautifully laid out. I just love Chuck Tingle’s way of writing. There’s always a touch of meta and a wink wink, but it’s also so unquestionably genuine. I don’t know any other authors who pull that off. A beautiful read for queer adults who are feeling lonely right now, Chuck Tingle reminds us we’re not alone. <3
Graphic: Body horror, Bullying, Death, Gore, Homophobia, Torture, Violence, Blood, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Alcoholism, Child abuse, Mental illness, Car accident, Outing
Full details of the childhood flashbacks: I felt a lot of tension during the flashback scenes of the main character as a child. They are difficult, but the worst that happens to him is getting punched by another kid and being forced to sleep outside and in a car overnight. There is also verbal bullying/homophobia leveled at him. The gore that happens to adult Misha is much worse, but within expectations for a horror novel, imo.
