Hungry Ghost
by Victoria Ying
I feel like I’ve read plenty of stories dealing with eating disorders, but none that were so bound up in a dysfunctional relationship with food created and sustained by a parent. This book isn’t a memoir, but the author explains how it is heavily based on her life, and it shows in the specificity of details and family context. I appreciated the realistic and complex family dynamics that allowed for character growth without having some magic fantasy ending.
