Right Behind You
by Lisa Gardner
If you are not yet a fan of Lisa Gardner, I don’t recommend that you start here. This book is good, but does not move at the breathless pace that Gardner’s work is often associated with.
It starts off with a nine-year-old-boy protecting his five-year-old sister from a father who is drunk and high and attacking the family with a knife. Using a baseball bat, Telly ensures their addicted parents won’t live until morning. Telly and Sharlah are broken up and sent to different foster families—several different foster families. In the end, however, Telly seemed to find good parents who were trying to get him ready for life on his own and didn’t judge him for his trouble with school and his petty crimes. Sharlah ended up with FBI profilers Quincy and Rainie.
It appears that Telly murdered two people at a gas station. When the sheriff investigates, it also appears that Telly murdered his foster parents. Now they have to find Telly before he kills again, which is when Quincy and Rainy are called in.
The mystery slowly unfolds, and it has a lot to do with abusive family and secrets and misunderstandings. I listened to the audiobook and both the male and female narrators did a good job.
