Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand

3.0

I listened to a podcast recently where Hilderbrand said if you were new to her, she recommends this book, The Blue Bistro (haven’t read), and The Perfect Couple (read and liked). Because of this, I was expecting a lot more! Sadly, this was one of my least favorite novels of hers. I thought Randall was one of her worst characters ever. Demeter’s characterization made me really uncomfortable for reasons that I don’t want to put into words. This won’t keep me from reading Hilderbrand though, they’re the perfect escapist books during the summer and I’m not necessarily reading them to gain some major literary revelation.

Side note: What teenager today uses the word “lush” to describe an alcoholic? Her editor could have made the teenagers’ conversations a lot more realistic.
