This is a war book and it's rather hard for me to read it as a fantasy book like all the reviews label it, let alone science fiction (which is how, for some reason, my library chose to label it). Are there fantasy elements? Sure, arguably, there's two. But don't go into thi prepared for reading fantasy; that realization is what caused me to DNF this book the first time I tried reading it. All that said though, this is a fantastic historical fiction. The characters are consumed by their desires and this is possibly the first book I've read where that level of desire makes sense, both for the characters and for the larger story at play. What price are we willing to pay for the realization of the fate we demand for ourselves?
