The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
by John Boyne
2,5
Not really a literary masterpiece. While the concept of this novel is quite good and its well-written enough, I'm not all too certain I like the execution. The perspective is interesting, but leaves some questions out in the open that I would have liked to see answered: was Bruno's mother having an affair? What are his sister's opinions on what is happening? I also find some of the historical improbabilities quite unforgivable. What irked me most about this novel, however, was Bruno's absolute denseness. I get that the novel plays around with a theme of innocence, but the son of a nazi who has no clue why they are supposed to be against the Jews? I find that quite unbelievable.
