The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
1.0

This could have been so much better. It has so much potential but the ending just fell flat. There was so much unnecessary drama and events and no real focus on the end. So many things don't even make sense.

My biggest disappointment is the story of Lord Asriel. I was honestly more invested in his end goal than what Lyra and her gang were up to. The author had been building up Lord Asriel's importance since the first book. He starts a war against God or in this case the Authority. And then the war doesn't even last that long. It doesn't even really impact anything in the end. When we see the authority after waiting for so long, he's just a frail old man that Lyra and Will kill by complete accident. He doesn't even remotely read like a tyrant so you start to wonder if angels and people really are that weak. That was the most disappointing thing I have ever read. After all this build up. I really couldn't believe it.

And another thing I have a problem with is the prophecy involving Lyra. It has been a mystery for so long and it when it comes to pass you can't help but be completely underwhelmed. Like I couldn't even. I just couldn't.

This book was such a disappointment. Why did we spend so much time with the Mulefa? In fact, why was the doctor/scientist even a main character at all? How do humans become angels after they die? Why was all the suspense with the assassin wasted in the end? What the hell was up with that ending? Why would Lyra and Will who did impossible things give up just because someone told them it was impossible for them to be together? It's not like the subtle knife is the only way to travel between worlds!

I am so angry at this book. It's like it wasn't well thought out at all. This is definitely the worst book of what could have been an amazing trilogy.
