Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
by Bryan Lee O’Malley
lighthearted
fast-paced
It really seems that at the time it came out we were supposed to … like Scott? Is that right?
From here, though, this feels more like a textbook of how to be shitty. And that’s fine. I don’t have to like the protagonist to like the book. The idea that he says he’s dating a high school girl at 23 because it’s “simple” and then immediately he starts dating a mysterious girl who’s exes you have to physically defeat is really saying something, ya know? I feel, based on the lil extras and the original proposal in the back of this edition, that this WASN’T the point at the time. Which is wild to me! The point seemed to be “Cool Dude Scott has really got himself into a pickle THIS time!!!” and not, like, “Scott is a walking red flag.”
