i absolutely loved all the dsicussion of language and its intricacies in this — it was soo interesting and never seemed to slow the book down or get so dense as to interrupt its compelling readable pace. which was INCREDIBLY fast for a 500 page book. this was so hard to put down!!!
for a book about language and colonization i do wish there was a little more discussion of like language shift and suppression and the way language itself is used as a tool of colonization outside of the magical context but that's just because i'm really interested in that after the class i took last year abt langauge revitalization in the context of the celtic langauges. i also feel like it isn't really my place as a white american to disagree with the violence-is-necessary thesis of this book but i do feel like other things CAN work...and also that a lot of robin's actions near the end were, like victoire says, spurred by grief more than anything else.
and oh my GODD i was so glad victoire survived. after all the other deaths. and bc when i thought she died when she and robin were in captivity i texted my friend who had read this already and got scared and when i realized she was alive my friend texted "now hope she stays that way"
