Girl A by Abigail Dean

5.0

Brilliant. I wish it was longer. The author is very clearly an intelligent person, which reminds me of how I felt reading Sally Rooney and Angie Kim. You can see it particularly in the story’s clever structure, and it’s apt portrayal of human strengths and weaknesses. Girl A explores how childhood trauma follows a person into adulthood, and the many ways it can manifest. The events that occurred in the house of horrors are slowly revealed through snippets of memory and hindsight, coinciding with present day. This allows us to witness first hand how specific experiences helped mould the adult versions of Girl A and her siblings. The character development was so wonderfully vivid.

It’s shocking and appalling without being gratuitous, and there’s definitely an element of mystery thrown in.
Highly recommend, can’t wait for the adaptation!
