I loved so much about this. The subjects themselves became fully realized, the settings were richly detailed and shared in a perfectly intimate way. The structure of the book is simple and pleasing. Best of all, Nicolson’s writing voice is a steady narrator/biographer who all at once, and like a magician, swirls the cape to reveal...it’s an autobiography! The lucid code switching was captivating and made for some of the most engaging biographical reading I’ve done. And she slips it in so casually — a folded piece of blue writing paper left in a folder that she had seen is tucked into the chapter on Vita Sackville West. Obviously these people are just her family, but sharing them and the wonderful splendid and ordinary things about them was a real treat to read.

I especially loved that my daughter gave me this book.
