The Polar Bear Explorers' Club
by Alex Bell
2.5* rounded up to 3.
The story started off whimsically charming but went a bit too far with the whimsy at the expense of the story. For a book that seems targeted at girl readers there was a frustrating lack of female role models. The main character is supposed to be the girl who can do what others can't, but she's frequently the worst character, always thinking the worst of others. I liked the discussion of adoptive family being real family. I can see what they were doing with the neurdivergent character but it rather ham-fisted. In small doses the whimsy was fun.
