The Uni-Verse: The Ultimate Guide to Surviving University
by Jack Edwards
A quick read and a good way to excited about the prospect of university.
First of all, I want to mention that this book is (understandably) based on the UK university experience. The author went to university there, and thus a lot of the advice simply is not helpful for people from other countries. While this makes a lot of sense, I do wish it was mentioned somewhere because I did not know this in advance. It makes a large chunk of the book essentially useless to me.
Luckily, the author's humor does help with getting through those pages, as there were quite some jokes included. This book discusses some important topics surrounding mental health in university, and I personally loved the custome ideas and drinking games. I did think the recipes felt a bit out of place, and I wished there was more about actual academics. Some parts were more relevant to life outside of university. There was also some repetition and I did catch a spelling error in my edition. I also wish the book was more in chronological order.
Lastly, while the author acknowledges his own priviledge regarding race, there was an entire section about his fear of shared bathrooms and how he was relieved not having an en-suite bathroom wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. I don't know if it was meant to be a joke, but I personally have never had an en-suite bathroom to begin with so that was quite unrelatable.
I am proud of Jack for publishing his first book, as I have been a long time viewer of his channel. I do have to rate this a 3/5.
