Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker

4.0

Preface: I didn't consume this book the usual way I read a novel (start to finish in entirety, backtracking and rereading whenever I miss or forget something). In fact, at the author's recommendation, I freely allowed myself to zone out, read chapters out of order, and yes, fall asleep while listening to it. My comprehension and retention obviously suffered, but being in a reading slump, I was just glad to get through a book and didn't set any strict requirements for myself.

That said, this book is extremely thorough. It isn't just a self-help book (though it can be). Walker is one of the world's leading experts on sleep, and he goes deep into the science of how and why animals sleep, and how it affects us. It's also succinctly written and enjoyable to read, despite the author's scientific academic background. I recommend it to anyone curious about sleep, and especially to those doubting its importance.

It might also help you fall asleep like it did for me :)
