The Covenant of Water
by Abraham Verghese
A saga across 3 generations of an Indian family who are part of a St. Thomas Christian community in the southeast of India, from the early 1900s to about 1970. While culturally rich and flowing through some good history and cultural and political shifts, I am not sure it has a cohesive theme or plot arc. Running through the story is a medical condition that runs through the family that makes some of the family strongly averse to water. We find out over time the condition diminishes or eliminates the orientation function of the inner ear. We ultimately find out it is a form of neurofibromatosis and can also lead to premature death. Interesting characters, an interesting medical condition, and interesting Indian history and culture, but not much underlying theme or plot.
