I really loved reading this novel. It was so well researched and the prose was so beautiful. Following the perspective of a mixed slave through the war and into the reconstruction period, the novel dives into many issues in Southern America. I enjoyed Viry's journey into womanhood and loved her moral fortitude in a time where morality seemed to have been abandoned.
