An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

challenging dark informative reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

A very poignant book about the long history of the US colonialism and how it has contributed to the genocide of the Native population, all the way from the 1400s to now. The book focuses heavily on how the US utilized every resource to not only forcibly remove the natives from their rightful land but to absolutely destroy their way of life. Calling it what it is: a genocide that has gone on for the last 400 years at least. Even as other oppressed groups in the US have made some strides towards equality, the natives still fight almost daily to get restoration of their way of life. The book really is a testament to the tenacity and unwavering strength of the Native American population as a whole. For those looking for a primer on the history of Native Americans and their oppression by the US, this is a great place to start.
