I think I expected it to be a lot more timeless ... If I had viewed it initially as a historical work, I probably would have liked it more.
It was hard not to be distracted from the timeless stuff by all the cruel and unusual punishment, the sexism and racism. Like, it's hard to believe that only a few hundred years ago it was customary to cut off your enemy's head and display it on a stake.
