In The Absence of Light by Adrienne Wilder
Did not finish book. Stopped at 10%.
I gave this a chapter to convince me but the amount of explicit ableism the narrator employs was way too much for me. My issue isn’t with the representation itself so much as it is with the way the allistic protagonist thinks about the autistic love interest. Rule of thumb for me is if I’m reading a romance book for fun, if it makes me feel like shit about myself for being disabled, I shouldn’t be reading it. I understand that books about autistic characters will show ableism, but I’m not here for it coming from the narrator and main character—it’s impossible for me to root for.
Graphic: Ableism
Moderate: Homophobia
Minor: Classism
