A good saga spanning the end of slavery, Civil War, and Reconstruction focusing on Vyry, the child of a slave and the white master, and her family. The description of the setting and time made it all very real, but I felt the characterization was lacking. It was very long, and despite being over 500 pages, I never felt close to Vyry or the other main characters.
