The Build-A-Boyfriend Project by Mason Deaver
2.5
2.5⭐️ rounded up!
The Build-A-Boyfriend Project follows Eli, a journalist working for a boss who doesn’t see his truly potential. His boss gives him an opportunity to finally get the staff writer job he has been vying for if he writes an article about dating. Who is he dating? Enter Peter, a Korean American man with no dating experience. While I love the premise of this book, I hated that Eli never told Peter what was going on with the article he was writing. As he knew that Peter was developing feelings from him and vice versa, it started to feel icky that Peter was being so open with Eli and that wasn’t being reciprocated. He essentially writes an entire shmear article about Peter in order to get a promotion and that was just too much for me.
However, I loved Peter’s character!!! He saved the book. I think a lot of people will be able to connect with Peter as someone who is in a job that they don’t love, socially awkward, being behind his peers with dating, and awkward but having so much love to give. When the conflict hits at the end of the book, I also did not like how Eli was acting like the victim when he was the problem the whole book.
The audio narrator was okay but found that he sounded so monotone the whole book. I also would have loved with this was duel narrator and we got a different voice for Peter! Overall, it is a cute read but has its flaws.
