An Unwritten Novel by Virginia Woolf

*SPOILERS*

I actually had to read this twice to understand that the narrator is making up stories about other people. Once that is understood it becomes interesting rather than confusing. I say interesting because although I see its worth and was keen on the idea I wasn't able to connect with the piece since (unlike what seems like scores of other readers or writers) I don't make up fake lives for other people. I'd rather let them remain a mystery. There was also the issue of a rather depressing tone.
In the end this piece like all other Modernist works is - in the most succinct terms - pretentious. If Modernism is your thing then great, go for it. Read it up and rave. But if pretentious and depressing writing is not your cup of tea I'd suggest you move on.
