I'm Straight, Right? by John Harris, Romeo Alexander

I'm seriously growing to enjoy [a:Romeo Alexander|17367017|Romeo Alexander|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png]'s MM romances. They are kinda short, to the point, sweet, packs quite a few punches and goodies and always enjoyable.

Usually I don't really fancy military romances, but I was glad i decided to pick this up on a whim. There's mention of military and even deployment stuff, but not heavy on it. Enough just to add depth to the story which I appreciated. The pace was easy and brisk, and the writing was, as per usual, good.

Sloane and Dean had been best friends since basic training and throughout all this time, Dean has been crazy in love with Sloane, and finally realising nothing is going to come out of it and that he needs to put his feelings past him, he decides to try dating and that is where we see the story finally come to a head. I loved both Sloane and Dean. Sloane the grumpy and mean bastard, but loyal and possesive to a fault and whom only Dean can understand and appreciate. I like that we only got to see his softer side when he is with Dean. As for Dean, you can certainly feel for him, as the angst of not having the one person he wants all this time, to his traumas and his internal struggles are laid out bare. The best friends to lovers trope was quite nicely played out here.

As for the GFY trope, it was nice that it wasn't played down to just a "Surprise! I like dicks now!" turn of events, and though it can be tricky to navigate, it was done pretty well here. More than anything, Sloane being demisexual rather than gay or bi made so much more sense due to the emotional connection he has with Dean. It was quite refreshing that that aspect was kinda laid out more as a possibility than some lazy and downright flippant attempt of throwing in a GFY trope just for the heck of it.

Overall great start to a new series that I absolutely would continue in a heartbeat.
