The Auschwitz Escape by Joel C. Rosenberg
5.0

I started this book immediately after finishing The Forest of Vanishing Stars. I wasn't sure if I was ready for another Holocaust book. I could not put the book down.

After Jacob's parents are killed, he along with his uncle have joined the Resistance and decide to liberate a train of Jews headed toward Auschwitz. The train is stopped, several Jews are able to escape, but the liberation is interrupted by the Nazis have who have closed the doors and the train has begun to move again, with Jacob trapped inside.

An older man takes Jacob under his wing and cautioned him to use the name of his son - the one who was just murdered by the Nazis as he jumped from the train, because if he uses his real name, they will know that he is actually part of the Resistance and will be immediately killed. The Nazis already have the names of people on the train, and Jacob isn't on that list.

At Auschwitz Jacob meets a Christian minister who is there because he hid several Jews.

Jacob soon learns that Auschwitz is not a labor camp, it is a death camp. He must find a way to escape and let the world know what is really happening there.

I was shocked, though, at how long it the the United States military to get involved in liberating these camps. It seemed that not much happened to rescue these people until information was leaked to the media and there was a huge outcry from the public.

Even though there are over 450 pages, this is a quick and easy read. It is fast paced and interesting. The author has done his research and there is a reason it was a New York Times Bestseller.
