Wicked
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Alright, so I decided to reread the first book to the Wicked Trilogy, because I was craving something fun and fast pace. Jennifer Armentrout’s books are typically fun, with sassy characters and spicy romances. However, this book was just soooo dull and full of tropes.
First of all, I’m not sure if this is just Armentrout’s writing style, but all of her books sound the same. As in, they feature the same formula. A wise cracking, sassy, innocent, and special protagonist. Extra points if she doesn’t believe she’s beautiful until the love interest informs her. A 6 foot something overly possessive alpha love interest, who wouldn’t be complete without washboard abs and a smoldering gaze. Insert eye roll. And let’s not forget the dab of token friend characters who play no real role, unless they’re overly sexualized, betrayers, or killed off.
Ivy was funny but reminded me of Katy from the Lux series, Alex from the Covenant Series, and Layla from her Dark Elements Series. She just didn’t really feel fleshed out.
Ren was a less than amusing version of Daemon and Roth. Most of his lines were cringe worthy, and he had definite stalker potential. I couldn’t see what Ivy saw in him besides his looks.
Tink was hilarious and quirky, and honestly the best character of the book. However, he couldn’t carry the entire weight of the novel on his shoulders. He’s a browny after all, and they have small builds. (Ignore my joke)
The world building could’ve been great, as the story takes place within the backdrop of New Orleans. But it never takes off. There was so much missed potential in favor of solidifying a corny and horny romance.
Overall I give it a 1.5. This just wasn’t for me.
