Bloodline by Claudia Gray
4.0

Another great Star Wars book by Claudia Gray. This one opens a window into the workings of the New Republic and the formation of The Resistance led by Leia. If you've read Lost Stars I'd say this isn't quite as good, doesn't feel as solidly thought-out. I imagine that the Star Wars Story Group at Lucasfilm says "this needs to happen, this needs to happen, and then this needs to happen," then they give it to authors like Gray to hammer out the details and make it a palatable reality. This she does quite satisfactorily, she is a good writer.

There is a big surprise twist in the story that you aren't supposed to see coming (you'll know when you get there) but I feel the reaction by characters to the news is a little over the top. I wouldn't think it would cause the issues that it causes, but maybe politics are just extra touchy in a galaxy far, far away. Speaking of politics, the senate and political stuff play heavily in this story. Don't let that give you nightmare flashbacks to the prequel trilogy, it's not that much of a grind. It can get tedious toward the end but there's enough action to balance it out if that's not your thing.
