The Disasters
by M.K. England
Ooft what fun!
I'm not being sarcastic here it was a fun read. I expected myself to find the characters amazing and my god MK England did NOT disappoint. Seriously! The whole play-boy space pilot character of Nax Hall, British academic Rion, Smart girl Case and Dr Eyeliner: Zee. Easily the best cast of characters I've seen for a long time. But my rating is more than 3, less than 4 and I have a good reason.
I thought that the story was slow...
I know what you're thinking "Are you serious!? THE WHOLE BLURB SAYS THEY ARE RUNNING FROM AN INTERGALACTIC SPACE TERRORIST GROUP!!! HOW IS THAT BORING!?!?!
Well it just was... there wasn't much on the actual situation. It was more the relationships and dynamics between the characters that really won some points. That as well as the diversity... WE HAVE A TRANS GIRL!! AND IT WAS JUST AMAZING!! It wasn't like "Oh yeah I'm trans" *Insert dramatic music and gasps from all corners of the universe* it was more like *shrug* "Cool" instead of this whole coming out thing being a big PLOT TWIST. I loved it how it was just slipped in there. And the fact that another character was Bi was just slipped in there. It wasn't defined like some of the examples we see in YA like: "Hi! I'm Bob and I like girls and guys." *wears t-shirt with this statement on it* it just eased in and very subtly. I read this for book club and even the group agreed that the whole lgbtq+ diversity was just spot on. Big applause for the author!
All in all, very fun but there was still room for improvement. Characters were spot on, it's MK England's greatest writing strength and she definitely used it to her advantage.
ACTUAL RATING: 3.5 STARS
