From Here to There: The Art and Science of Finding and Losing Our Way by Michael Bond

informative inspiring lighthearted reflective medium-paced

4.5

super fun read (listen) about wayfinding: how we get lost, how we find our way, plus the psychology and biology behind it. bond discusses indigenous languages, and how the wayfinding and landmarks are built into them; how skilled nagivators are always paying attention and keeping focus; and how grid cells help us (and mice) keep ourselves oriented. i was really interested in the polynesian navigators and how they use the currents, the stars, and the birds to know where they are. i wish this book was longer and delved more deeply into not just the anthropological aspects, but also the biology and history of wayfinding.
