The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky

4.0

the dream of a ridiculous man - ghost of christmas yet to come ahh (except its gets worse for the protagonist)

"In the end, these people grew tired of their meaningless labours and suffering appeared on their faces, and these people proclaimed that suffering was beauty, for only in suffering is there thought."

the meek one - he was a boy she was a girl can i make it any more obvious? he was 40 she was 16 what more can i say?
she cheated on him, fell ill and he drove her to suicide. i thought the story would be black and white but it's in the grey area, me thinks.

bobok - the funniest one out of the four stories. my personal take on this is that even in death, people will remain filthy and unchanging. the philosopher says that a moral stench is attributed to their corpses. the dead are still able to speak, think and interact with each another. this is supposed to be a "mercy" from God, intended for them to reflect on the sins they've committed during their time alive. however, they choose to remain unshameful of their wrongdoings.

a christmas party and a wedding - pedopedophiliaaa

on a more serious note, this was truly heartbreaking. yulian mastakovich is a piece of shit.

he likens the girl—who, mind you, is ten years old—to a doll and tries to kiss her. the young boy clasps her by the hands, seeing how uncomfortable she is.

i read this part and my chest ached. its just so sad.

"Get out, get out of here, get out!" he said to the little boy. "Go to the ballroom! Run along to your playmates!"

"No, don't, don't! You get out of here," the girl said, "leave him alone, leave him alone!' she said, almost bursting into tears.

he chases the boy out the room and starts hitting him. then a man walks in, questions the scene infront of him because the child was known to be "modest and quiet" but yulian mastakovich calls the kid a "big mischief-maker" when all he'd done was try to help the girl 😭😭😭😭 he made it seem like the kid was at fault and all that he was doing is reprimanding a misbehaving kid, so the blame shifts to the young boy 😭😭😭 and as if the injustice wasn't enough, he talks to the girl's parents. he's singing praise, going on about her beauty, talents, grace and good manners. and instead of finding it weird, the entire room treats him with reverance, hanging on every word he says. the father is smiling and the mother is practically crying with happiness. he even gets invited to their home 😭😭😭 its so so bad because the parents are so over the moon simply because a RICH man is taking interest in their daughter. five years later, they get married. its so sick.

she's just fifteen and she already lost the entirety of her life to a man.
