This was brutal, and very good. I did struggle with the pacing a bit, but it wasn't enough to put me off the book! I wish Sloane didn't have to face quite so many impossible decisions, but I guess that's the point... I, for once, felt like she was acting in quite age appropriate ways. Often, protagonists in YA who are some version of a chosen one, or picked for a role, etc... end up reacting far too maturely, and just adapting far too easily imo. That isn't exactly Sloane's situation, but it is similar enough that I was expecting more of that here. I definitely enjoyed the book, though I couldn't help grimace on many an occasion. Definitely pay attention to the content warnings; it will be too much for some.
