Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel by Val Emmich

3.0

So.... where do I start.

The story started off interesting and relatable, for I could totally understand what's going on Evan's head as someone with anxiety. But, when I reached the part where the Murphys got into the picture, Evan started to make me slightly uncomfortable. Evan Hansen fabricated this story of beautiful discreet friendship with Connor Murphy instead of standing up and being honest to the Murphys from the beginning, just because he relished the parental affection and had a crush on Connor's little sister. Not only did he fabricate the whole rose-glassed portrayal of the friendship, he also later got intoxicated by the fame and attention that he took profits of it. He made The Connor Project. That is just straight up manipulative and exploitative to me.

Imagine being Connor Murphy. You took your life by yourself, wishing your family to finally and properly notice you. Yes, they did, but your story was all made up by a boy you barely talked to and he enjoyed it more and more.

I know Evan Hansen is an outsider and no one should ever feel that way. However, I also do not like how Evan was constantly sounding rude ad ungrateful for his mom, Heidi, who worked her ass off for him. I cannot imagine how much Heidi's heart broke when she found out about the whole thing with Murphy.

What upsets me, especially, is the ending. It does not make sense to me that the worst punishment that Evan got is the cold stare from the Murphys for like, a year. There was no rage, which made no sense if the Murphys really cared about Connor.
